Ukrainian Music with Malanka

Malanka is the result of a musical encounter between a Ukrainian singer and bandura player and Neuchâtel-based musicians passionate about Eastern European music.

“Malanka” is a traditional Ukrainian celebration held on the night of January 13th to 14th.

It blends folklore, masquerades, and songs to mark the symbolic transition into the New Year. Participants, often dressed as mythological or animal characters, go from house to house singing and performing humorous skits. Very popular in Western Ukraine and among the diaspora, Malanka is a vibrant celebration filled with music, dance, and role reversals.

The group Malanka, formed in October 2022 in Switzerland, offers a repertoire of songs and music from Ukraine, both traditional and contemporary. With energy and musicality, Malanka delivers festive, danceable tunes as well as deeper, more introspective atmospheres that invite an inner journey.

Kateryna Zhaburovska, with her unique, vibrant, and colorful voice, transports listeners into the richness of her culture with deep emotion and expressiveness. You’ll also likely discover the bandura, a symbolic Ukrainian instrument that combines elements of the zither and the lute.

Joining the bandura are Christelle Biolley’s flute, Katia Ritzi’s accordion, and François Clavel’s percussion. The close bond between these four friends brings a beautiful touch of authenticity to their music. They warmly invite you to join them and share in their world!
